Want to experience Kentucky? Take a Bourbon tour

Things that define a state or region come and go over time. Kentucky used to be known for tobacco and coal. They were Kentucky’s biggest exports. Many people’s entire family trees have evolved around production. Coal mines tapped out. Tobacco went out of style.

But there are those that are forever. And for Kentucky, that’s horses and… Bourbon.

Bourbon is a specific type of whisky, similar to Sour Mash, Scotch, and Irish whiskies. Bourbon is required to be at least 51% corn and aged in charred new-oak barrels for at least 2 years. Contributing to what makes bourbon special is the water that filters through Kentucky’s natural limestone geology. Limestone is great at filtering out iron, which can darken and sour a bourbon’s taste. It also creates a favorable pH environment and adds important minerals like calcium, which is favorable to the fermentation process. These conditions make for an excellent whiskey and set Bourbon apart.

Between legendary distillers and many upstart craft distillers, bourbon has become an experience and, as such, a critical part of Kentucky’s tourism.
